Internet Resources for Earth Sciences May 1992 by Bill Thoen This is a list of resources available through Internet that may be useful to those who have an interest in the earth sciences. It is not intended to be "the" FAQ (there are too many subjects that could be covered), but it is an attempt to answer only the "Frequently Asked Questions" on "Where can I find on Internet ..." | Special thanks to Drotos Laszlofor large con- | tributions on "European Resources for Earth Sciences" (ASTRA, NISS) As this file gets larger, new techniques will be needed to navigate it. If you are using rn to read this, you can use control-G (^G) to jump through the major subject headings. (I've put the keyword 'Subject:' in front of each section). The other way is to use text search tools (like g in rn) to find a string. For example, if you wanted to quickly find the info on 'World Cities Data', you could search for -7.4- to jump right to the start of this info. If anyone knows of a hypertext-like way to do this better, please let me know! | Changes since the last release are marked with a '| ' in columns 1-2. | This should help you update your old file (or just quickly see what's | new). There are a number of alternative archive formats, | but we have chosen to use PKZIP. It is not possible to mail archives | from one computer to another because they are "binary" files. First | they must be converted to "ASCII" files and UU encoding achieves this. | The slight disadvantage of UU encoding a binary file into an ASCII file | is that the latter is larger than the former. | | ------------ | The Software | ------------ | The following list describes the AAG Files that are available on the | Archive. You need only specify a file name (or part of it), and archie will return all the ftp site address, the directories and full file names that contain that string. This is how many of the sites mentioned here were orignially located. How it works ============ The following is taken from Zen and the Art of the Internet mentioned above in the How to FTP section: "Currently, archie tracks the contents of over 800 anonymous FTP archive sites containing over a million files stored across the Internet. Collectively, these files represent well over 50 gigabytes of information, with new entries being added daily. The archie server automatically updates the listing information from each site about once a month. This avoids constantly updating the databases, which could waste network resources, yet ensures that the information on each site's holdings is reasonably up to date. To access archie interactively, telnet to one of the existing servers. They include: archie.ans.net (New York, USA) archie.rutgers.edu (New Jersey, USA) archie.sura.net (Maryland, USA) archie.unl.edu (Nebraska, USA) archie.mcgill.ca (the first Archie server, in Canada) archie.funet.fi (Finland) archie.au (Australia) archie.doc.ic.ac.uk (Great Britain) At the login: prompt of one of the servers, enter `archie' to log in. A greeting will be displayed, detailing information about ongoing work in the archie project; the user will be left at a `archie>' prompt, at which he may enter commands. Using `help' will yield instructions on using the `prog' command to make queries, `set' to control various aspects of the server's operation, et al. Type `quit' at the prompt to leave archie." Examples ======== As an example, if you type 'prog landsat', you'll see somthing like the following: archie>prog landsat Host ames.arc.nasa.gov Location: /pub/SPACE/MISC FILE -rw-rw-r-- 332 Feb 7 1991 landsat-5.02.07.91 FILE -rw-rw-r-- 306 Mar 20 1990 landsat5.03.20.90 Host lth.se Location: /pub/netnews/alt.sources/volume91/jul FILE -r--r--r-- 894 Jul 30 1991 LANDSAT.images.of.NE.Z Host procyon.cis.ksu.edu Location: /pub/pictures/jpg/misc FILE -rw-rw-r-- 89913 Mar 13 22:27 landsat.jpg Host ucsd.edu Location: /images/color-sunraster FILE -rw-r--r-- 117849 Sep 18 1989 landsat.scr.Z Host vab02.larc.nasa.gov Location: /gifs/misc DIRECTORY drwxr-xr-x 512 Feb 12 13:03 landsat ------------------------------ You may already have archie installed on your own system. Here at Colorado SuperNet, we have it all ready to run, and so we don't have to log into a remote site (which may be pretty busy). If you don't have the software and want it, telnet to the McGill site or other nearby server, and read the help messages to find out how to get it. The default settings for archie are pretty broad and may not suit you, but you can change them. I usually use the following switches to get a nicer looking output: -s : case insensitive substring search -l : list one match per line -t : sort inverted by date -m # : specifies maximum number of hits to return (default 95) Like so (serching for 'USGS'): archie -sltm 10 USGS 19920219163800Z 512 ucdavis.ucdavis.edu /pub/usgs/ 19911230203200Z 512 spectrum.xerox.com /pub/map/incoming/USGS_DATA/ 19901201000000Z 111 csus.edu /pub/ftpsites/isdres.isd.usgs.gov 19901109000000Z 390 quiche.cs.mcgill.ca /archie/logs/isdres.isd.usgs.gov.log Which gives me a case-insensitve serch (s) in a one-line per item list (l), sorted by most recent (t), which stops after 10 (m 10) "hits". In this case the search was performed directly on our host, not via a telnet connection, but the process is similar either way. Subject: -4- How to Use Anonymous FTP sites ------------------------------------------- Not everybody has access to ftp, but if you do, these sites have some 'good stuff'. Please be aware that ftp can put some serious strain on the host system, so try to limit your downloads to off-peak hours (host local time!). All of these sites are open to the public. Login as 'Anonymous', and the password is either your own Internet address or 'guest'. To download files to your system, type 'get ' where you substitute for the file you want. Also before you download any binary files you should issue the command: binary before you issue the get command. Here's a sample ftp session to csn.org to get an excellent guide about getting around the Internet. It's title is "Zen and the Art of the Internet" by Brendan P. Kehoe, and I *highly* recommend it! It explains a lot in a very easy-to-understand way. You respond at the 'ftp>' prompt. Lines that begin with numbers are sent by the host computer at the ftp site... Also 'teal%' is my local system prompt at Colorado SuperNet(you don't type this) . Your prompt will undoubtably be different. ----- start example ----- teal% ftp csn.org Connected to csn.org. 220 csn.org FTP server (Version 4.14ifi Thu Sep 19 10:03:27 MDT 1991) ready. North America is split into 26 windows, each approx 1000x1000 pixels, at a resolution of 1.1 km/pixel. There are a number of types of GIF images in this directory: the Satellite Snow Cover Maps, weekly national and regional summaries and a special blow-up of the Upper Colorado basin. The naming convention for the daily product is: WWSYYJJJ.TTT, where WW is the window number S is the satellite (snow maps: g for GOES or a,b,c for NOAA-A, -B, -C, w for Snow Water Equivalent, n for SWE normalized, x for the latest snow cover map with added text) YY is the year (92) JJJ is the Julian date, the date from January 1. TTT is the type, GIF or SHF, where GIF is a binary graphic image and SHF stands for the SHEF message, the Standard Hydrologic Exchange Format. It is the alphanumeric results of the satellite snow cover mapping by basin and by elevation zone. A number of derived products are also distributed. Snow-Water Equivalent, and Deviations of SWE from a normal value are calculated, incorporating the SNOTEL values from the Soil Conservation Service, for California and Nevada, and the Western United States. A summary of the week's snow cover is usYYJJJ.gif, with comments from the hydrologist in usYYJJJ.msg. A table showing which scenes have been mapped so far this year is in the file YYJJJ.tbl. At the end of the snow season, all the snow images, satellite images and ancillary data will be compiled into a CD-ROM. Snow data for 1991 and 1990 are available for $200. Over the last six years the CTI has concentrated on research into computer applications relevant to teaching and has funded over a hundred development projects across a wide spectrum of academic disciplines. A substantial amount of courseware was produced. To build on the success of this initial scheme, the CTI has changed its role. We are now seeking to promote the effective use of computers in teaching and provide information on appropriate tools and courseware for lecturers who are using, or wish to use, these methods. The CTI Centre for Land Use Studies On the 1st of January 1990 the CTI Centre for Land Use Studies, located at the University of Aberdeen, was established to provide a comprehensive information service to university teachers of agriculture, forestry and other disciplines relating to land use. We are convinced of the educational benefits which will come from the increased use of computers in courses on land use studies. However we recognise the cost of software development and by documenting and evaluating existing software we can ensure that scarce resources are not wasted through needless duplication. In addition, we need to determine the approaches which will make the most effective use of computers in teaching. Only by staff in higher education working together can progress be made and this will be a prime objective of the Centre - to provide a focal point for discussion. What will the Centre do? * Collate and distribute information on computer hardware and software appropriate to the teaching of land use studies via newsletters, catalogues and on-line databases. * Provide advice on suitable courseware and review existing packages available in the UK and abroad. * Promote and discuss the effective use of information technology in teaching through visits, workshops and conferences. Details events are given in Section O8B. Supported by IBM United Kingdom Trust Section O8B Page 1 of 13 "Software for Teaching Land Use Studies" (Second Edition) --------------------------------------------------------- The second edition of the Centre's software directory now lists over 220 packages suitable for universities and colleges. If you would like a copy, please contact Clive Young at the Centre. We are currently compiling a third edition, including software from the USA and Europe. GAIA Software for the Macintosh | GAIA Software for the Macintosh Now Displays and Analyzes Aerial | Photos, Airborne Video, PICT Files and Satellite Imagery. | | New York, New York---April 24, 1992---GAIA (Geographic Access Image | and Analysis) Software for the color-enabled Apple Macintosh computer | can now display, manipulate, and analyze satellite imagery, scanned | aerial photos, airborne video and any PICT image. GAIA (pronounced | GUY-uh and named for the Greek goddess of the earth) was developed by | ornithologist Richard Podolsky and forester Philip Conkling | specifically with conservation groups, universities, towns and | schools in mind. GAIAUs capabilities are focused on displaying any | earth imagery including full SPOT or LANDSAT images and allowing | users to combine spectral classes into meaningful covertypes and | analyze a given area for perimeter and acreage. GAIA also has full | rastor/vector integration and can overlay vector maps (from | MapGraphix and Microstation) onto the raster imagery to superimpose | roads, geopolitical borders, hydrography, etc. When vectors are | co-registered GAIA supports all Global Positioning Systems (GPS) by | displaying UTM coordinates for any pixel in an image. | | According to Dr. Richard Podolsky, "GAIA brings remote sensing not | just the desktop, but into the realm of conservationists, local | decisionmakers, universities, and schools. Most GAIA users have only | dreamt about being able to access remotely sensed data." In addition | to ecologists and foresters, dozens of school children are currently | using GAIA. "People need to analyze the earth's surface for | important tasks such as protecting wetlands and other significant | lands. Nyberg The EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, SD, 605-594-6507, is now making copies of the Relational World Data Bank II and shipping them. The copies are about 450 megabytes of data (about 170 megabytes when compressed using the UNIX compress program). They can only distribute on Exabytes using the UNIX tar format and 6250 BPI 9-track tapes (I don't know what format). Copies cost $320 and they can charge your credit card. This is "raw" data. EROS sent me a big disclaimer letter stating that they considered it unusable in its current condition and that they would be preparing an updated distribution later this year (I think they said sometime in June/July, although probably August/September). I have received and successfully read in the data. Several people (well, OK, TWO so far) have expressed a willingness to help defray my expenses for getting the data and time and tapes and have also indicated that they can possibly make the RWDB2 available for anonymous FTP. The deal is this: the company for which I work (and own :-)) will make such copies available for $60 (if you're in Virginia, you'll have the pleasure of paying our wonderful 4.5% sales tax, meaning $62.70). What is RWDB2? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relational World Data Bank II (RWDB2) marks the latest stage in the evolution of the World Data Bank file system developed for use by the CIA. This evolution is not complete. Line work is undergoing periodic revision. Attributes other than RANK have been noted for inclusion in various categories of coverage. Some WDB2 categories have been split, and other categories have been added to RWDB2. This evolution is expected to continue. ... There are major differences between the structures of the WDB2 and RWDB2 file systems. ... WDB2 stores unstructured line work in 22 header/coordinate file pairs. These file pairs define 6 categories of coverage for 7 world regions. Lines from the WDB2 files have not been topologically clean, and this line work has not been updated for several years. RWDB2 is topologically structured and uses sets of geographic panel files with an attribute data base. There are 727 geographic panels with 5 binary files per panel. The panel HEADER file has no practical use. The remaining panel files store the topological BOUNDARIES, the EDGES that form those boundaries, the OWNERS (feature-components) of those edges and the geographic COORDINATES that spatially define those edges. The attribute database has 35 relational files. These files provide: a list of theme names and them id numbers; lists of category names and category id numbers; a list of panels and their geographic limits; a list of super-features that are retrievable by name; lists that link super-features with their feature-components; lists of node, area and linefeature-components; lists by category of feature-component attributes; and a schema for the category attribute relational files. The feature-component files are the key to retrieval of RWDB2 features. They have links to the category, panel, and feature-component attribute files that help to qualify feature-components fo ruse in a query. They also have the necessary offsets into the binary panel files for the spatial retrieval of feature-components. While the RWDB2 schema has evolved extensively from that of WDB2, the content of RWDB2 has not changes much from WDB2. Currently, RWDB2 amounts to topologically clean WDB2 with some added categories, revised ranks and new attributes for most categories. ... The CIA implementation of RWDB2 has the 35 feature-component/attribute files loaded into an INFORMIX database with the panel files stored as binary files outsides the data base. ... An alternate implementation of RWDB2 would use flat ASCII files (the files delivered on the distribution tape) for the selection of qualified feature-components. ... The Relational World Data Bank II data set is not readily usable in its current form. The number of files is large (3670), and the disk requirements are significant (over 414 MB). The number of open files may become prohibitive for the application and the query response time may become excessive. Missing is a data base schema describing all of the relational files delivered on the distribution tape. The user must define an appropriate schema for an intended relational database system by reading the RWDB2 Distribution Format Guide and keying in the pertinent information. ... The EROS Data Center is in the process of building sets of WDB2-formatter header and coordinate file pairs from RWDB2 categories. These files will give us topologically clean line work that is as current as our current delivery of RWDB2. Each set of files will provide world coverage for its category. There will be a set of files for each RWDB2 LINE category. Although AREA categories have been defined, there are currently no AREA features in RWDB2. NODE categories are under consideration for conversion, but are not being converted at this time. The boundary-edge topology in RWDB2 is being dropped in our conversion. RANK is the only attribute that will be retained in our header files. The WDB2 formatted files could become available by summer of 1992. ---------------- RWDB2 Users' Guide, Edition 1.5: In January 1972 the first World Data Bank 2 (WDB2) input sheet was digitized. Five years later the basic coverage of coast, islands, lakes, rivers and international boundaries was completed and released to the general public. Changes in technology over the past twenty years have allowed for the storage and production of large, complex maps that can be displayed on desktop computers and plotted in full color with tones and text. In order to to take advantage of this technology, WDB was restructured to include topological relationships between linear feature with names and attributes and point features. It is now known as Relational World Data Bank 2 (RWDB2). The CIA stores RWDB2 in an SQL format, however, the data is available to the public in a generic ASCII format from the Earth Science Information Office of the USGS. RWDB2 was designed for producing printed small-scale page-size maps and selected small-scale reference maps. This data base should not be used for navigation or for producing maps needing high geodetic accuracy. The input scale is normally 1:3,000,000. Europe, Central America, parts of Southeast Asia and parts of the Middle East were input at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Northeast USSR [Ed - It's a little dated!] and the Antarctic were input at a scale of 1:4,000,000.
